Welcome Day and Assessment

If you’ve only recently been diagnosed or just heard about us then this page is for you. With so many unknowns, receiving your diagnosis may be frightening – we understand that and we’re here for you. So, here’s what to do:

Firstly ask your Consultant or GP to refer you to us, either by email or letter. After we’ve received your referral, we’ll contact you to arrange a Welcome Day visit.

Your Welcome Day visit

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the services and support available here. You can expect:

  • A guided tour of NMC, including an opportunity to see the physio department
  • The opportunity to meet people who work, study and volunteer at NMC
  • A chance to chat with our Head of Support to talk about the day-to-day realities of living with a neuromuscular condition and ways to address those challenges.
  • To book in for your Physio Assessment

People recently rated our Welcome Days:

Additional information

  • You’re welcome to bring people with you. We aim to support people with neuromuscular conditions and everyone else affected by that diagnosis.
  • NMC is fully accessible with ample parking including WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) bays. We have a variety of different accessible bathrooms, and a one-level layout with an adapted kitchen.

Our Welcome Day is designed to make you feel comfortable and informed, and to ensure that both you and your loved ones have the support you need.

The second part of your introduction to NMC is a Physiotherapy Assessment.

Physiotherapy assessment

This assessment, with two of our team, helps us learn about your medical history, your priorities and any goals. It may also involve measuring things like:

  • Muscle strength
  • Balance
  • Range of movement

The assessment may last up to 2 hours.

After the assessment

  • We’ll work with you to create a personalised treatment plan.
  • A detailed written report will be provided to inform other health professionals involved in your care, ensuring all aspects of your treatment are coordinated.

Important: Even if you’ve met many physiotherapists in the past, each assessment at NMC is unique to ensure the best possible treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about your assessment before you attend, please contact our team for clarification or guidance.
