History

Neuromuscular Centre (NMC) was established in 1990 in response to a significant lack of services and opportunities for individuals, primarily young adults, living with neuromuscular conditions. Families were particularly concerned about the abrupt loss of support and services once individuals with these conditions reached adulthood. Motivated by the need to fill this gap, the founders of NMC, Kate Fox and Sarah Kelly, sought to provide comprehensive services and support those living with neuromuscular conditions to lead fulfilling, productive lives.

Initially, we offered specialised physiotherapy services on a small scale, which were funded by one of the first Comic Relief Grants. As the demand for services grew, so did our capacity to provide them.

In the years that followed, we expanded and established NMC Design+Print, a social enterprise. This initiative was run by individuals with neuromuscular conditions, and it became a successful, award-winning business that generated a financial surplus. This surplus was then reinvested into the core work of NMC, helping to ensure its continued growth and ability to serve our community. It remains very much at the heart of what we do.
