Participants Needed for a Research Study

We are working in partnership with the University of Birmingham, investigating how dietary protein is used in Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD). Protein is essential for skeletal muscle, but current UK guidelines may not be sufficient for people with BMD. We are also yet to understand the role of protein in people with Becker.

This study will investigate if the response to protein is different in people with BMD, and if increasing the amount of protein in a person’s diet can improve the body’s muscle building response.

What does Participation involve?

  • 2 site visits, each lasting 5 hours, following an overnight fast.
  • A post-fast meal will be provided.
  • Consumption of a protein drink, with breath samples and body composition assessments.
  • Remaining seated throughout (no exercise or activity throughout). The use of electronic devices and books will be permitted.
  • Prior to the trial, you’ll be issued a 3-day food diary.
  • Optional personalised nutritional advice and dietary analysis is available.

You can get involved if…

  • You’re an adult male
  • You have a diagnosis of Becker Muscular Dystrophy, or
  • You’ve no long-term medical conditions (for control participants).
