NMC's Christmas Choir Competition

We are delighted to invite primary school choirs to enter our Christmas Choir Competition!

NMC is a charity providing a range of essential services and specialist advice to people and families affected by neuromuscular conditions. For almost thirty years we’ve held our Spirit of Christmas carol concert at Chester Cathedral.

Matthew Kelly, our President, hosts the event and brings with him a range of actors from the screen and stage to perform festive readings. Past readers have included stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Imelda Staunton, Jim Carter, Sir Derek Jacobi and Jemma Redgrave to name a few.

This year is an extra special year, as this will be our final Spirit of Christmas, so we hope you’ll consider getting involved in our competition!

In the run up to the concert, we are asking primary schools to submit two Christmas songs to our competition, with the winning choir performing at this year’s Spirit of Christmas carol concert (Friday 24th November) as well as a receiving a certificate, winners’ trophy, and a voucher to spend on school items of their choosing.

Please enter by downloading the form below and by sending us a recording of your choir performing two songs by Wednesday 1st November 2023. One song must be a traditional carol, and the second a Christmas song of your choice, but please no Hark the Herald!

Please note: Children must be between 7 and 11 years old and the choir must have a minimum of 25 children and a maximum of 60 children. Any choirs entering the competition must arrange their own transport to and from the Cathedral for the performance. NeuroMuscular Centre cannot take responsibility for the transportation of the choir or for the supervision of children whilst in the Cathedral or the grounds of the Cathedral. Suitable provision of care is the responsibility of the school and/or the parents/guardians. All children must be on site by 6.10 pm for rehearsal. We kindly ask that backing tracks are not used as we’re unable to include this during the concert performance.
